The Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had agreed to donate RM4 million to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

According to FAM General secretary Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, the donation was to provided as a reward for the achievement of the national under-22 football team, which managed to qualify for the finals of the Asia Football Confederation (AFC) under-23 tournament in 2018, planned to be played in China.

The team which is coached by Ong Kim Swee emerged champions of Group H in the qualifying stages by collecting six points.
