FAS says SUFC needs to clean up its own mess

The Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) continues to distance itself from now likely defunct Sarawak United Football Club.

This was firmly stated by FAS Competiton Manager Fitry Johnwayne during his recent interview with HarimauMalaya.com.

Fitry in the interview stated that from day one, the newly appointed president of FAS, Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdulrahman had made it clear that FAS does not own a team and is not involved in any teams competing in the Liga Malaysia organized by Malaysia Football League (MFL), or semi-pro league organized by Amateur Football League (AFL).

He quoted that aside from the league regulations which now require only football clubs to participate in these leagues, FAS is also now focused on football development.

He further adds that FAS hopes to be the supplier of players and coaches to these profesional and semi-profesional teams which participate in major league.

“From day one, Abang Zulkarnain announced that FAS doesn’t have a team. This means SUFC has nothing to do with FAS. This is different previously when the president of FAS was the owner of SUFC” Fitry said to HarimauMalaya.com.

“I can confirm now that FA (football association) is an FA, and the football club is a club which competes in the Liga Malaysia.

“We will focus on development only from now. This is to ensure the same problem of owning a football club will not repeat itself.

“We don’t discount the possibility of having a team in the future, but for now, we are focused on development.”

“At the moment, we want to hold competitions so that all our FAs are active, and the best players can be supplied to the teams playing at top tier leagues.” said Firty again.

Fitri continued to add that whatever SUFC owes is to be dealt by SUFC’s management and is not the burden of FAS to settle as they are two different entities. He added that it is up to SUFC’s management to settle any debt they have incurred.

He however noted that the problems facing SUFC had dented FAS’s credibility in seeking sponsors.

“We have nothing to do with SUFC. Any debt related to salary is under SUFC. We are two seperate entities. This is the fact.

“This is the same with Kuching City FC. They have nothing to do with FAS. Whatever debt they have, its up to them to solve it.

“It is however difficult for us to ask for sponsors due to negative image we had in the past.” said Firty again.
