[World Cup] Costa Rica & Italy win in group D

Costa Rica hit three second half goals to beat Uruguay 3-1 on Saturday and severely dent the World Cup hopes of the fancied South American nation who struggled without star striker Luis Suarez.

Edinson Cavani gave Oscar Tabarez’s side a first-half lead from the penalty spot. But Uruguay fell apart in the second half when Joel Campbell slammed in a shot and Oscar Duarte’s header gave Costa Rica a 2-1 lead.

Six minutes from the final whistle, Uruguay’s defence slipped up again. Marcos Urena was allowed to run in and place the ball under goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

England on the other hand were stunned by Italy with Claudio Marchisio scoring first in the game. The goal was short-lived however as Daniel Sturridge put the score level two minutes later, thanks to a fine assist from Wayne Rooney.

Mario Balotelli nonetheless secured Italy’s victory with a powerful header in the 50th minute to ensure his side secure the full three points, and come in second in Group D of the World Cup.
