SUKMA: Sarawak must win against Pahang

The Sarawak men’s football team must win their final Group D match against Pahang if they want to have any hope of advancing to the next stages of the competition.

The team today managed a 1-1 draw against Wilayah Persekutuan at Stadium Mukah, with Muhamad Shairulaikal scoring for Wilayah persekutuan in the 28th minute, and Mohamad Faris scoring Sarawak’s goal in the 59th minute.

With the draw, Sarawak only has one point to show from two matches, and are third in the group standings.

Above them is Wilayah Persekutuan with 4 points, and Perak is top with the full six points from two matches.

Winless Pahang are bottom, and was sent packing by Perak in another Group D match, with Perak winning the game and booking a slot in the quarter finals.

Pahang however are dangerous side now that they have nothing more but pride to play for, and could go all-out to secure the full three points, at the expense of Sarawak.

That said, Sarawak’s chances to follow Perak are slim considering they also need Wilayah Persekutuan to lose their next match against Perak.

This comes as Wilayah Persekutuan are likely to go all out in their final group match against Perak to ensure they make the cut, while Perak, which had already qualified, will likely rest key players in that match as preparation for the next round.

Such situation, if true, will likely favour Wilayah Persekutuan although it is unlikely for Perak to simply throw away game.

Regardless, Sarawak will still be able to overtake Wilayah Persekutuan if Wilayah Persekutuan fall, and Sarawak winning by a two or more goal margin against Pahang.
