Kuching City FC began their Liga Super Malaysia 2026/27 campaign with a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the Piala Sumbangsih at Stadium Sultan Ibrahim tonight.

The match, played on 21 August 2026, also served as the opening fixture of the 2026/27 Liga Super season, with the result counting towards the league standings.

For Kuching City, the encounter was another major test against JDT after the two sides met in last season’s Piala Malaysia final, where the Southern Tigers recorded a 2-0 victory.

JDT wasted little time in making their dominance count.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Marcos Guilherme found the back of the net with a shot following an attacking move down the left flank.

Kuching City attempted to respond and looked for an equaliser, but JDT’s defensive organisation made it difficult for The Cats to create clear-cut opportunities.

JDT came close to doubling their advantage in the 26th minute when Nacho Méndez connected with a header, only for the attempt to go over the crossbar.

Bergson da Silva also had opportunities late in the first half, but Kuching City survived the additional pressure to go into the interval just one goal behind.

Kuching City push forward

The Cats started the second half with greater attacking intent as Aidil Sharin Sahak’s side attempted to find a way back into the contest.

However, their efforts left spaces for JDT to exploit.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, with Oscar Aribas firing home after receiving a pass from his teammate.

Kuching City continued searching for a way back into the game and came close through Nur Shamie Iszuan, but his effort was denied by JDT goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan.

With Kuching City pushing forward in search of a goal, JDT eventually put the result beyond doubt.

Zaheditabar Shahab scored in the 85th minute after receiving a pass from Arif Aiman, completing a 3-0 victory for the reigning champions.

The result saw JDT retain the Piala Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah for an 11th consecutive time.

The victory also extended JDT’s unbeaten run to 109 matches, surpassing the previously cited record of 108 unbeaten matches held by Ivory Coast club ASEC Mimosas from 1989 to 1994.
