Malaysia secured their first full points in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers and Asia Cup Qualifiers 2023 tonight after they defeated rivals Indonesia at Stadium Gelora Bung Karno.
Things however didn’t go according to Malaysia’s plan when Alberto Goncalves scored the opening goal for the home side in the 16th minute.
Malaysia equalized through substitute Mohamadou Sumareh in the 37th minute, but Goncalves restored the Garuda’s lead before the half time break.
After the breather Syafiq Ahmad leveled the score for the Malayan Tigers, indirectly increasing the tempo of the match.
Emotions ran high with some Indonesian fans throwing water bottles onto the Malaysian fans in the stadium.
The sitiation got out of hand when several Indonesian fans caused the match to be stalled for 6 minutes after they invaded the Malaysian supporters section.
After the incident was clewred off by the security forces, the restart of the match saw Malaysia going forward in numbers to create numerous dangerous chances against Indonesia’s goal.
The tired looking Indonesian players defendes in numbers, and frustrated every attempt made by the surging Malaysians.
As the match looked like a certain draw, Sumareh became an instant national hero when he netted the winning goal in the dying minutes of the match to seal an epic come back win for Malaysia.
