Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah was elected as the new president of FA of Malaysia (FAM) after a two time vote just now.
The 55-year old crown prince of Pahang polled 27 out of 39 votes to beat Tengku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim in a two-way contest after Sultan Ahmad Shah announced his decision to step down and withdraw from the race.
Johor FA president Tunku Ismail garnered 12 votes after the recount which had to be held following the FAM constitution that states that there is a need for a two-third majority win in the event there are more than two candidates (due to the fact that FAM president Sultan Ahmad Shah is still considered a candidate despite announcing his withdrawal from the race).
In the contest from the deputy presidency, FAM vice-president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah, and Selangor FA deputy president Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad have been voted in as deputy presidents.
Sarawak also had a representative in the FAM office bearers as Datuk Sudarsono Osman was also elected as one of the Vice Presidents of FAM.
The delegates also unanimously voted for Sultan Ahmad Shah to be conferred with the lifetime honorary president post.
The 83-year-old Pahang Ruler was the longest serving president, having held the top post since 1984.
The 50th congress-cum-elections was held at the Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie, Sunday to elect a new group of office bearers for the 2014-2018 term.
