The Sarawak SUKMA men’s football team defeated Pahang in their final Group D match at Stadium MDM on 16 August 2024, but failed to make the cut for the quarter finals.
Backed by the home crowd, the match saw Sarawak leading comfortable 3-0 until half time, with Pahang able to score two goals in the second half to see the match end at 3-2 favouring Sarawak.
Despite the win, Sarawak fell short of advancing to the quarter finals of the competition as their chances were also tied to the match between Wilayah Persekutuan and Perak prior to the final game.
Sarawak needed Perak to win in that game to have a slight chance to advance further.
However, in that match, both teams only managed a goal-less draw, which was enough to ensure both sides would advance to the next stage of the competition with Perak gaining 7 points, and Wilayah Persekutuan having 5 points, enough to send Sarawak packing.
Sarawak’s chances to advance to the quarter finals were already difficult following the stalemate against Wilayah Persekutuan.
