The new qualification format for the prestigious Malaysia Cup was announced by Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) during the Liga Super and Liga Premier briefing today.
According to the briefing, the oldest tournament in Malaysia will begin in July and it will be played concurrently with the Liga Super and Liga Premier.
This also means that the Malaysia Cup will be played after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and after the month long mid-season break for the month of Ramadan.
FMLLP said that there would be 16 teams in the Malaysia Cup, comprising of teams ranked 11 and above in the Liga Super (MSL) and the top four team in the Liga Premier.
Team ranks will be determined based on their current standing after the 11th match day of the Liga Premier and Liga Super.
Aside from they way teams qualify, the Liga Super and Liga Premier briefing also revealed that there would not be much change to the general format of the competition.
