Malaysia’s chances of qualifying for the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia are virtually nil after they were edged 1-0 by Bahrain at the National Stadium in Manama on Friday.
Striker Ismaeel Abdulatif struck in the 72nd minute to hand his side the win to top the group with 10 points and leave Malaysia’s hopes in tatters.
Datuk K. Rajagopal’s men remain third in the group with four points behind second-placed Qatar who have nine points.
In the qualifiers, Malaysia lost their opening match against Qatar 2-0 in Doha in February but bounced back to beat Yemen 2-1 in Shah Alam in their second match. Last month, Malaysia held Bahrain to a 1-1 draw in Shah Alam.
Meanwhile, in the earlier played Group D match, Qatar beat Yemen 4-1 at the Sheikh Khalifa International Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
Malaysia will next take on Qatar in Shah Alam on Tuesday and travel to basement dwellers Yemen on March 5 for their final group match.
