In a sudden move, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has decided that the team taking on Tottenham Hotspur, better known as Spurs, would not be the Malaysian national team, or a pure Malaysian side.
According to a statement by FAM, foreign players playing their trade in the Malaysian League instead would be called up to beef up the Malaysian side when they play against Spurs this coming 27 May 2015.
FAM further reasoned that their decision to include foreign players playing in the Malaysian League was due to the fact that a bulk of the players in the national team are from Pahang FA and Johor Darul Ta’zim, two teams currently involved in the AFC Cup.
Despite their reasoning however, we can’t help feel that FAM is bowing down to the pressure exerted by vocal support group Ultras Malaya whom have been very vocal in criticizing such fixtures as they feel that such matches would hurt the pride of the country.
Ultras Malaya have also called for the fans to boycott the match calling it worthless to the ranking of the national football team.
