The Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) is pushing for the setting up of the Borneo Football Federation.
The desire was stated by FAS Competition Manager, Fitry Johnwayne during an interview with Harimau Malaya.
Fitry clarified that the Federation’s main aim is to reduce travel cost, with teams in Borneo only needing to travel within Borneo for a football match, and hence reducing the travel cost.
Fitry also added that there can be a possibility that the federation could also select players from the federation to play at the Liga Super.
In addition to that, the Borneo Federation would also help develop football in Borneo which includes football management, coaching, player and refereeing.
Fitry also said that plans have already started to set-up the Borneo Football Federation with four football associations, namely FAS, Brunei Football Association (BFA), Kalimantan Barat Football Association (KBFA) and Sabah Football Association (SAFA), linking up online for a meeting.
During this discussion, FAS had also offered themselves to temporarily lead the federation as the main secreteriat with the association now waiting for black and white responses from each four FAs that attended the meeting.
“We are still waiting for a formal response and letter from all those involved in regards to appointing FAS to lead the federation’s protem comitee. Only once we have such documents can we register the Borneo Football Federation.” said Fitry during the interview.
Fitri also confirmed that they will be extending the invitation to join the federation to other FA’s in the near future.
“In Kalimantan itself there is four (football associations). We will invite Labuan, with Brunei and Sabah already available. We will inivite all football teams in Borneo.” Fitry said to Harimau Malaya.
Fitry also said that FAS is expecting the Borneo Football Federation would be ready by the end of the year of 2024.
