FAM appoints German as new Under-23 head coach

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has appointed Frank Bernhardt of Germany as the new head coach for the under-23 team, previously known as Harimau Muda.

The 46-year old coach was selected ahead of two other candidates, namely Michael Weiss and Datuk Ong Kim Swee.

Bernhardt will be offered a two year contract which ends at the end of the SEA Games 2017, in which Malaysia is expecting to win gold in football.

According to FAM, they will call Bernhardt in for further discussions in regards to his contract details.

Bernhardt has long term stints with youth squads in Estonia in which he coached the Estonia U-21 and U-19 from 2007 until 2012. During his stint, Estonia’s U-21 did not qualify for the UEFA European U-21 Championship although the U-19 side did come in at 8th in the 2012 UEFA European U-19 Championship.

For the 2012 and 2013 season, Bernhardt moved to Estonian club Kalev Tallinn before being appointed by FAM as the new U-23 head coach.
