Today we get the thoughts of Dayang Zainatull Aqma or Atul who works for ASTRO, on her thoughts of our #BolaTanpaMercun campaign.
The campaign which aims to educate and also give awareness to the mass public on the dangers of playing firecrackers during football matches has got enormous support within Sarawak, with some personalities from outside Sarawak also eager to join in the fight against these explosives known as ‘mercun’ in Malay.
In our brief interview with Atul, she had nothing positive to say about the people playing mercun during football matches as she said that she prefers chants and cheers to mercun.
The beautiful Sarawakian girl also said that people playing mercun during games are irresponsible as they portrayed the team and the state very badly.
When asked to be more specific, Atul the said such incidents “make her REALLY sad” because she is one of the many Sarawakians working outside of the state which has to hear people of neighboring states say “Oh, it’s Sarawak… I’m not surprised” when such incidents occur, adding that such statement “makes us sound like we’re terrorists.”
Atul also stressed that while tighter security can help decrease mercun players during football matches, she feels that awareness is key.
She also added that stopping the mercun manace will not happen overnight, but was happy that initiatives are taken by all Sarawak and Malaysian football fans to get it out of the ‘football system’.
Looking forward, Atul whom is a huge football fan herself said that football without mercun will be something she looks forward to happen in Malaysia, as she adds “When I become a mother one day, I don’t want to ban my kids from attending football games at the stadium because of safety concerns cause by firecrackers”.
To this, she ended the interview with “Bola Tanpa Mercun has my full support. Please take the mercuns somewhere else”.
