It was reported in recent days that Tony Fernandes, owner of Asia’s largest low cost airline AirAsia, is interested to buy DRB-Hicom FC.
It is understood that the purchase of DRB-Hicom FC would then be combined with AirAsia FC which is owned by Tony, hence giving AirAsia FC the opportunity to leapfrog into the Liga Premier, replacing DRB-Hicom.
Despite the strong rumours of such move, there has been nothing official, but it is understood that DRB-Hicom has decided to pull out of the Malaysia League for next season.
Astro Arena reports that Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Ramalingam has supported the idea of combining both teams, but the move has irked Felcra FC.
Felcra FC stands to benefit when DRB-Hicom decided to leave the Malaysia League as they would gain automatic promotion, filling in the vacancy left by DRB-Hicom.
If Tony indeed buys over DRB-Hicom FC and takes the Liga Premier slot it owns, it is very likely that AirAsia FC would get a huge boost in terms of finances as Tony is more than capable of injecting his club with a massive amount of resources.
